Pipe Tobacco Savings

Pipe Tobacco Savings: How much money can I save rolling my own cigarettes with pipe tobacco?

Hey, James here,  And you’re reading my uncensored review of what I really thought about BNB Tobacco.

Note that this is a review though, if you’re looking for the BNB Tobacco website then click here.

beretta-elite-king-cigarette-tubes-200ct-cartonWhy am I writing this?  Well, when I was trying to get the cost of our smoking down, there weren’t many real reviews around so I thought I’d write one quickly to help any of you who are in the same position as I was.

But be warned, I’ll be going into both the good and the bad points, so if that’s something you might not want to hear, then you may as well leave now.

So here’s what I think…

My wife and I both smoke and with cigarette prices where they are, I was looking for a way to cut down our cigarette costs without quitting smoking.  For me, that’s just not an option – I LIKE to smoke and so does my wife!  I had heard about rolling our own cigarettes and we did so with cigarette tobacco, which lowered our price a little bit when we bought bulk cigarette tobacco.  Then I learned about using pipe tobacco instead.  The trick is that pipe tobacco isn’t taxed at the same rate as cigarette tobacco, which brings the price down even more.

While I can’t say exactly how much you will save, because that depends on the price of cigarettes in your area.  Around here, they’re about $70 a carton.  But when we buy pipe tobacco and tubes through BNB tobacco and roll our own, ours cost about $9 a carton.  Between us, we go through almost 8 cartons of cigarettes a month.  So we’re saving almost $500 a month!

I know you’re wondering what the difference is between pipe tobacco and cigarette tobacco.  I wondered too until we tried it ourselves.  The biggest difference is in the size of the “cut”.  The pipe tobacco is cut a little wider than cigarette tobacco.  Other than that (and the lower price, of course) there is NO difference.  It tastes the same and smokes just the same.  I’ve even had non-smokers tell me that my cigarette smoke doesn’t “stink” like other people’s cigarette smoke.  Huh, that’s good to know!

Every once in a while I think I am craving a manufactured cigarette so I’ll go buy a good old pack of Camels, Marlboros or Winstons (my formerly three favorite brands).  I am quickly reminded why I like my home-rolled pipe tobacco cigarettes better.

The first thing I like is that the roll-your-own tubes don’t have the Fire Safe Cigarette (FSC) spray on them.  This spray is placed at four locations on the manufactured cigarettes so that they go out when you’re not puffing on them.  I get that it’s a safety feature but come on, I have yet to burn down a house smoking and don’t like that junk messing with my smoke.

The other thing I like about rolling our own using pipe tobacco versus the store bought cigarettes is that I think it’s a better smoke.  The cigarettes burn longer and more steadily and they taste better than any of the manufactured brands.  I don’t know if that’s because we roll a little tighter than the manufactured ones do or if it’s because there are less chemicals in ours.  Either way, I don’t care!  I get a much more enjoyable smoke.

I guess I got a little off track and I’m sorry about that.  It’s just that I like rolling our own cigarettes so much that I get a little excited telling others about it.  So really, you can save a TON of money rolling your own smokes using pipe tobacco and tubes from BNB tobacco.

Pipe Tobacco Taste

Pipe Tobacco Taste: How does pipe tobacco taste compared to cigarette tobacco?

premier-supermatic-cigarette-injector-machineWhenever we order something online, we have to worry about quality.  Will it taste as good?  Is the packaging sound?  Is the product all dried out?

We have tried several varieties of pipe tobacco through BNB Tobacco and found our favorite to be the OHM brand.  It is a nice, smooth tobacco with great flavor.  Our least favorite (and one I do not recommend you purchase) is 4 Aces.  That stuff stunk and we didn’t even want to smoke it.  OHM brand, on the other hand, produced a great, inexpensive smoke.

We tried all of the OHM varieties and liked all of them equally well, even though each variety has its own flavor characteristics.  We also found that the pipe tobaccos were just as good as if not better than cigarette tobacco.  Don’t let the lower price fool you!  Pipe tobacco is priced lower due to a different taxation rate.  The quality of the tobacco and the smoke is still wonderful – you just don’t pay the high tax rate.

Our two favorite tube brands are Premier and Beretta.  Both are comparable but the Berettas are cheaper.

Of course you also have to wonder if the product will actually arrive.  Many years ago, I ordered already-rolled cigarettes from some discount site and while they took my money, I never received any product.  Lesson learned, I guess.  I worried about the same thing the first time I ordered from BNB tobacco too.  Turns out that I had nothing to worry about.  Each and every item I ordered arrived and in a timely manner too.

Since then, I have placed an order every month for the last 6 years and have not been disappointed once.

I would (and have) recommend BNB Tobacco to my family and friends and to you too.

Pipe Tobacco Cigarettes

Pipe Tobacco Cigarettes: Can you roll the perfect cigarette at home?

ohm-turkish-red-pipe-tobacco-16oz-bagThere is a slight learning curve to rolling your own cigarettes so they taste good, smoke right, and stay together while you smoke.  Over the years, my wife and I have found a few tricks to getting a perfect smoke every time.

The right tobacco:  To get a good smoke, you have to start with the right tobacco.  I recommend OHM pipe tobacco through BNB Tobacco.  A bad tobacco will make a bad smoke.  The last thing we want is a harsh cigarette or one that tastes like stale gym socks.  We found the OHM brand at BNB to be our favorite.  It produces a smooth, easy smoke that tastes great.  They taste better than any of the manufactured cigarettes you can buy.

The right tubes:  Tubes are really all just about the same as one another.  We do prefer the Beretta brand of tube because they are quite a bit cheaper, while still a good quality tube.  Some brands contain flawed tubes but Beretta never has.

The right roller:  Ah the roller.  We have tried dozens of cigarette rolling machines.  We tried several that were electric and operated on a kind of hopper system where the tobacco went into the hopper and then an auger ground the tobacco and stuffed it inside the tube.  They sucked!  The tobacco was so mangled that it would fall right back out of the tube or the fire would fall of the end while you smoked.  Bad, bad, bad.  After a lot of trial and error, we finally found the manual Top-O-Matic to work the best.

I know, I know, wouldn’t it be sweet if there were a more automatic way to make your cigs?  We burned through a $450 electric machine that was semi-automatic.  The cigarettes were so loosely packed that they fell apart when we smoked them.  The tobacco wasn’t injected all the way to the filter so the cigarettes would flop over on themselves.  The expensive machines were a disappointment all the way around.

The Top-O-Matic produces the best cigarette and it couldn’t be easier to use.  All you do is stick the tube on the end of the little nipple, load your tobacco in the hopper and crank.  Tada, you have a cigarette in just a couple seconds.

The right moisture level:  If you don’t use up all of your tobacco once the bag is opened, be sure to squeeze out the extra air and close up the bag tight to keep your tobacco fresh.  It shouldn’t be wet but just slightly damp.  If it is too dry, it won’t roll well and your cigarettes won’t stay together.  If your tobacco gets dried out before you can get to it, try putting a small chunk of bread or apple in the bag with it.  Either one will rehydrate your tobacco for you.  If it soaks up too much moisture, just take the bread or apple out and leave the bag open for a bit.

The right pack:  Everything in moderation!  When you’re packing your tobacco into the hopper of your Top-O-Matic, you don’t want it to be super loose.  But you also don’t want to jam it in there.  It should be packed firmly.  And don’t forget to fill the ends of the hopper with your fingers before you crank that handle.  This will ensure that your tobacco extends to both ends of your cigarette.

The right storage:  To keep our cigarettes fresh, we put them into a plastic container (like Rubbermaid) that is just big enough to hold a carton’s worth of cigarettes.  Too much room in the container will let the cigarettes that you worked so hard to make dry out.  You can also toss a piece of bread in the container with them to keep them fresh.

Your supply:  How much to order?  How often to order?  When to order?  First, you need to know how many cigarettes you smoke, which you probably already know.  Your supplies through BNB Tobacco take about a week to arrive once you order them (you can also choose expedited shipping).  So be sure to plan ahead as to when you will need more tobacco and tubes.  I like to place an order once a month and always have a month’s supply on hand.  That way we’re never caught short.

How do you know how much you’ll use?  The tubes come 200 in a carton, just like manufactured cigarettes.  So you’ll want to order the appropriate amount for how much you smoke.  One pound of tobacco can fill about two cartons of cigarettes.  So be sure to order one pound of pipe tobacco for every two cartons of tubes you order.

It’s pretty easy to do.  Just sample your cigarettes as you go to see if you need to make any adjustments.

I hope you enjoy your homemade smokes as much as we do!
